History
This is a petite, elderly woman who has a fierce passion for grammar. She is a hard-nosed, no nonsense school teacher who grew up on the Fire Nation's outer islands sort of the upper class suburbs of the Fire Nation. Ms. Kwan is a prime example of a Fire Nation school teacher: she believes in hard work, hard discipline and more hard work. Ms. Kwan has been a teacher at this school for more than forty years and some of her star students have become Fire Nation generals, war machinery inventors, and even one member of the Rough Rhinos (Vashir). Without question, Ms. Kwan is the teacher they never forget.
After Aang is brought to the school, Ms. Kwan assumes he is a new student from "the Colonies" in the Earth Kingdom. Calling him a slob, she immediately teaches him proper posture and Fire Nation etiquette. The next day, after the Fire Nation Oath, she assumes Aang was making a mockery of the Fire Nation and announces a pop quiz. The first question asked for the year in which Fire Lord Sozin defeated the Air Nomads' Army. Aang, confused, points out to the stunned class that the Air Nomads had no formal military, and were defeated by a ambush attack---a fact apparently erased from Fire Nation history books. Ms. Kwan then says he couldn't know unless he was there 100 years ago (which he was).
