What is the relationship between Azula and Zuko? toggle section
Azula and Zuko share a complex sibling relationship. From when they were kids, they constantly found themselves in a rivalry, with Azula seemingly having the upper hand with being the better bender and carrying the favor of their father Ozai and grandfather Azulon, where Zuko was more beloved by their mother Ursa and uncle Iroh, much to Azula's envy. When they were both tasked as teens to track down Team Avatar, they often found themselves in conflict and had no qualms dueling it out. Despite their messy relationship, Zuko did not kill Azula when he had the chance, indicating a deep-seated familial bond. Azula often questioned Zuko's motives and ambitions, particularly his desire to be Fire Lord.

She is also able to both generate and redirect lightning, one of only a few known characters able to do so.

History

Azula

Azula is the favorite child of Fire Lord Ozai. Ever since her childhood, she has always been favored by her father, but was never able to please her mother due to Ursa (mother)'s ability to see through her show-off exterior and to see the cruel child that lied within.

But Azula was always given special treatment from Ozai, due to her gift for firebending and ability to impress higher ranking officals in the Fire Nation, such as Ozai's father and previous Fire Lord, Azulon. Coincidentally, Azulon was also a firebending prodigy at Azula's age, and Azula is named for him, as stated in the episode "Zuko Alone." Since Azula's firebending skills and knowledge of Fire Nation history far exceeded that of Zuko, Azula was constantly given praise and special treatment from the Fire Lord, and Zuko was never treated as equally, except by his mother, who disappeared for a unexplained causes, leaving Azula with a father who favors her and leaving Zuko motherless.

Azula has also always enjoyed the pain and displeasure of others. In the episode "The Storm," Azula's second appearance, she is seen in the audience of a Agni Kai between Zuko and the Fire Lord, where Zuko refuses to fight his father and then recieves a large scar on his face due to Ozai's mercilessness. She is seen smiling as Zuko screams in pain for refusing to duel Ozai.

Her firebending skills are almost completely unmatched by anyone. She is the only known character seen that can use blue firebending. The only person who is known to be more skilled than her is Iroh, who is able to redirect and counter her devestating lightning attacks. She and Zuko have fought on many separate occasions, but he has yet to win due to her agility and power. She, along with Iroh, and no other known character, has the ability to generate and guide lightning to her ability, giving her unbelieveable power. As seen in many fights, she is skilled enough to charge up her attacks and deliver incredible amounts of damage to her opponents. Her lightning can be stopped, but when she attacks without her opponent on defense, she can do devestating damage.

Her main goal is to capture Zuko, but also bring Ozai the Avatar. By doing this, she threatens Zuko's quest to regain his honor and place on the throne. She likes to be perfect and exact. As time has gone on in the story, her focus has diminished on capturing Zuko, but rather to bring glory and power to the Fire Nation.

Azula has a lot of cruel methods to get what she wants, and she has employed two of her best friends, Mai and Ty Lee, in her search for her prey. When all three of them work together, their individual skills and abilites make them almost unbeatable.

Recently Azula has come to Ba Sing Se with an intention of using the city's disadvantages against them. She and her two allies, Mai and Ty Lee, ambushed the Kyoshi Warriors, including Suki. They took their costumes and posed as them in order to gain entrance to the inner circle of the city. Coincidentally, Sokka and Aang were leaving (the end of "The Earth King") to meet Sokka's dad and Guru Pathik. This lead Sokka to vouch for them so that they could enter the city and slowly gain control and command of the Dai Li, so that Azula could take down the city with a coup. She pretended a fake alliance with Long Feng in order to take control of the city and to get the Avatar. By instilling a great deal of fear in the Dai Li agents she was able to continue to control them after Long Feng attempted a betrayal. By having all of the army generals captured at once she successfully took control of Ba Sing Se.

Childhood

Even as a child Azula was cruel. She was childhood friends with Mai and Ty Lee, who would spend time in the palace with her. Azula would go out of her way to embarass others, especially Zuko. Azula and Ty Lee knew of Mai's crush on Zuko as a child, so Azula set up a "game" in order to get Zuko and Mai together, just for Mai and Zuko's embarassment.

She was always questioning the governing ability of their grandfather Azulon, who was the Fire Lord during Azula and Zuko's childhood. She never liked their uncle, Iroh, and was always hoping that their father, Ozai, would be replacing Azulon rather than Iroh, who had birth rights due to the fact that he is Azulon's first born.

In the episode "Zuko Alone," Zuko flashes back to their childhood. At one point in the episode, it is reported that Iroh's only son, Lu Ten, died in a Fire Nation battle. Iroh was so emotionally scarred that he abandoned his siege at Ba Sing Se and had to return home. Azula believed that he was weak for this, and that a real general would have stayed there and finished the Fire Nation's siege at Ba Sing Se, calling him "a loser and a quiter". Even in the episode "The Avatar State," Azula continues failing to show any respect towards Iroh, even though he is an elder and a firebending master.

Azula as a child

Azula today

Azula still remains today the keniving and cruel person that she was during her childhood. Her fantastic gift for firebending has given her the ability to forcefully govern her troops given to her by the Fire Nation, but she abandoned them when they made the mistake of ruining an attempted capture of Zuko and Iroh.

Azula now travels with her Fire Nation childhood friends, Ty Lee and Mai. Instead of having a powerful group of following soldiers, Azula is more comfortable and powerful with a small, elite team who posses unique abilities rather than a powerful militia of Fire Nation soldiers. Her firebending prowess continues to improve, and her tactical abilities gave her the ability to organize a completely successful coup at Ba Sing Se, leaving her as the Queen of the city and the leader of the Dai Li, Ba Sing Se's secret police force.

As the second season ended, she and Zuko had joined forces together in order to stop the resisting force of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph, whose intentions were to stop the coup in order to keep the Fire Nation at bay against the Earth Kingdom. Their efforts were futile, due to Azula and Zuko's strong firebending and leadership abilites.

Character appearences

The character of Azula can be traced back to Book 1 Chapter 12: The Storm. In it, she was seen smirking and openly rejoicing over her brother's Agni Kai. Some claim that Azula was seen playing with Zuko in his flashbacks of his childhood, but some argue it is Iroh's son Lu Ten though this cannot be confirmed. She is also seen at the end of Episode 20, "The Siege of the North: Part 2." As shown in Book 2: Chapter 1, she has the ability to bend lightning. A sub-skill of firebending, but Azula is the only bender to have used it thus far in the series. However, Iroh has been shown to channel lightning, as seen in the episode The Storm when he protects the ship, and again when he redirects Azula's blast of lightning. Azula is also the firebender silhouetted in the opening credits.
